Frequently Asked Questions

An IPA, or Independent Physicians Association, is an organization of physicians who practice independently but come together to negotiate with health plans.

By uniting, independent physicians can leverage their collective strength to negotiate competitive rates with health plans, making them comparable to those offered by hospitals and health systems.

In addition to negotiating rates, IPAs often provide valuable support services to their members, including billing and credentialing assistance, group purchasing discounts, and access to a directory of healthcare providers for referrals.

To explore the full range of benefits offered by ViaCare, please visit the Member Benefits page here on our website.

In a messenger model IPA, ViaCare’s members have the opportunity to review each new contract negotiated by ViaCare and decide whether they wish to participate in the rates offered. This approach grants providers greater autonomy in selecting which health plans they prefer to engage with, rather than being automatically enrolled in plans they may not prefer.

By empowering providers with this flexibility, ViaCare ensures that its members have greater control over their business decisions and can align their practices with their preferences and priorities.

ViaCare IPA is a primary-care-focused organization based in Brooklyn. Our mission is to unite independent physicians for the purpose of securing competitive contracts.

Founded by the physicians and leadership of First MedCare, a well-established multispecialty clinic located in Canarsie, Brooklyn, ViaCare draws upon over 20 years of experience in serving the Brooklyn community.

Over time, we’ve observed a decline in independent primary care providers, largely due to rising costs of malpractice insurance and stagnant insurance reimbursement rates. ViaCare seeks to address this issue by partnering with primary care practices, offering competitive health plan contracts, group discount rates for malpractice insurance, and personalized support for credentialing and billing matters.\

Our goal is to empower independent physicians, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to thrive in today’s healthcare landscape.

By joining ViaCare IPA, independent physicians gain access to a range of valuable benefits designed to support and enhance their practices:

  • Competitive Contracts: ViaCare negotiates capitation and fee-for-service contracts with competitive rates, with Affinity/Molina and Fidelis as our initial health plan partners. This ensures favorable reimbursement for our members.

  • Flexibility and Control: ViaCare operates on a messenger model, empowering members to review and choose whether to accept new contracts, as well as select their preferred payment method between capitation and fee-for-service arrangements.

  • Vacation and After-Hours Coverage: Access our after-hour and PTO phone coverage program, guaranteeing continuous coverage for your practice and ensuring patients receive care when they need it most.

  • Group Purchasing Discounts: Benefit from group purchasing discounts on essential items such as malpractice insurance, liability insurance, medical supplies, and more, helping to reduce overhead costs for your practice.

  • Personalized Support: Engage with our 1:1 Liaison program, where each provider or medical group is assigned a dedicated account manager responsible for addressing all aspects of their business needs. This personalized support ensures that members receive tailored assistance and guidance to navigate the complexities of healthcare operations effectively.

ViaCare IPA values and respects the autonomy and independence of each member physician. Joining ViaCare IPA allows you to maintain your status as an independent practitioner while benefiting from the collective strength and resources of our organization.

We understand the importance of preserving your ability to make decisions that best suit your practice and patient care philosophy.

ViaCare IPA offers support, resources, and opportunities for collaboration, all while ensuring that you retain control over your practice’s operations and patient care decisions.

Joining an IPA contract does not nullify a provider’s existing direct agreements with payers; it simply supersedes any existing contracts while the provider participates in the IPA.

For instance, if Dr. Smith becomes part of a ViaCare IPA contract and, at a later date, ViaCare decides to terminate some or all payer contracts, Dr. Smith’s services would automatically revert to his original or direct contracted rates with Fidelis or other payers. Therefore, there’s no need for providers to re-enroll with the plans; they would seamlessly transition back to their original arrangements in such a scenario.
